A series of low-magnitude earthquakes were recorded in Mayotte between Tuesday, May 15, and Thursday, May 17. According to the reports most measured between 4 and 5 on the Richter scale. The most powerful earthquake - with a magnitude of 5.8 - was recorded on May 16.

Some minor damage has been reported. A crisis-cell has been established to prepare for further, potentially powerful earthquakes.

Individuals present in Mayotte are advised to be prepared for more earthquakes and aftershocks and to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
