India: Increased security likely for Shanghai Cooperation Organization foreign ministers' meetings in Benaulim May 4-5

Officials to tighten security due to Shanghai Cooperation Organization foreign ministers' meetings in Benaulim, India, May 4-5.

Warning

Event

Increased security is likely in parts of Goa State due to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers' meetings slated to take place in Benaulim on May 4-5. Foreign ministers from eight countries will attend the event.

Security will likely be tightest near the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa, which will host the meetings, and Goa Dabolim International Airport (GOI), where most of the attendees will arrive and depart. Increased police presence is also likely along primary routes linking the two facilities. Temporary road closures and localized traffic delays are possible. Flight delays could occur at GOI while the foreign ministers are arriving and departing. Activist groups could attempt to capitalize on the presence of the foreign dignitaries by staging protests to draw attention to their causes. Police may disperse crowds if gatherings become disruptive, possibly leading to clashes.

Advice

Heed all instructions of local authorities. Plan for localized traffic disruptions and flight delays. Confirm flight reservations in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations in Benaulim May 4-5. Avoid all protests. Leave the area immediately if clashes occur.
