Mexico: Student activists marching in downtown Mexico City April 21

Student activists marching in central Mexico City, Mexico, April 21. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Around 250 student activists are marching in downtown Mexico City April 21. The purpose of the action is to demand financial aid. Participants assembled at the intersection of Avenida Insurgentes Sur and Avenida Paseo de la Reforma before marching to the Alcaldia Cuauhtemoc headquarters building.

The demonstration will likely cause transport disruptions along the march route. Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the march as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the march route. Seek alternate routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks set up by protesters; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
