India: United Democratic Front (UDF) parties to stage protest marches across Kerala State, April 26

Opposition parties plan rallies to local government offices in Kerala State, India, April 26. Increased security likely. Clashes possible.

Informational

Event

State opposition parties under the United Democratic Front (UDF) will hold rallies across Kerala State on April 26 to denounce tax hikes. Organizers will stage a march towards, and protest outside local self-government (LSG) bodies such as the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation office. Start points and timings are unclear. A few hundred people may join each event, with the highest attendance likely at rallies near corporation offices in urban centers, including Kannur, Kochi, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Thrissur.

Security deployment and localized transport disruptions are likely along march routes and around protest sites. Political party offices, public squares, and major intersections near LSG offices are potential start points for marches. Police may cordon off LSG buildings and close access roads to prevent large gatherings. Security forces have used water cannons to disperse previous opposition protests outside government offices. Activists may engage in minor clashes with police and/or ruling party supporters.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a security precaution. Leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernmental building if clashes occur. Allow additional travel time near corporation offices. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
