Bolivia: Teachers' union plans nationwide protests April 4

Bolivian teachers' union to protest, block roads nationwide April 4; traffic disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Teachers affiliated with the Confederation of Urban Education Workers of Bolivia (Confederacion de Trabajadores de Educacion Urbana de Bolivia, CTEUB) plan to protest, as well as block roads and highways, nationwide on April 4. In Santa Cruz, protesters will gather outside the Urban Teachers of Santa Cruz headquarters from 17:00 for a march in the city. The organizers have not confirmed other locations and times of gatherings; however, unless averted, the demonstrations will probably cause significant transport and business disruptions along main roads and highways, especially in and around La Paz. Participants will protest to make several labor-related demands after CTEUB and the Ministry of Education failed to reach an agreement.

Police will likely deploy to protest locations. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible, particularly if officers attempt to disperse protesters and open roads forcibly.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them before proceeding. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
