Germany: Climate activists closing multiple roads in Berlin, Oct. 26

Climate activists closing multiple roads in Berlin, Germany, Oct. 26; increased security, ground transport disruptions reported.

Warning

Event

Climate activist groups are staging multiple protests, closing roads in Berlin Oct. 26. At least four separate incidents are ongoing, early on Oct. 26, to demand that the government takes action to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Local authorities report roads are blocked at these locations:

  • The A100 southbound carriageway is closed from Messedamm.

  • The Wedding feeder road towards Neukolln, such that the A100 is closed before the Charlottenburg motorway junction.

  • Frankfurter Allee near Frankfurter Tor in Friedrichshain.

  • Leipziger Strasse in the direction of Potsdamer Platz near Spittelmarkt.

These protests follow similar events earlier this week. Further climate-related protests are highly likely in coming days.

Authorities will deploy additional security services to all actions. The demonstrations and related security measures, including likely road closures and movement restrictions, will prompt localized business and transport disruptions in the surrounding area. Public transport in demonstration areas could be canceled or diverted. The actions are likely to be peaceful, as most climate activist groups advocate for nonviolent civil disobedience. However, police could resort to forceful methods to disperse activists, and isolated scuffles with disgruntled commuters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Do not attempt to pass through any roadblocks. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in affected areas.
