Anti-government protests taking place in several cities across Argentina over July 9 Independence Day holiday; clashes reported in Tucuman.

Warning

Event

Anti-government protests are taking place in several cities across Argentina, including Tucuman, La Pampa, Santa Fe, and San Nicolas de los Arroyos, July 9. The gatherings have been organized to coincide with the nation's Independence Day holiday observance.

In San Nicolas de los Arroyos, a large protest march organized by agricultural groups is causing traffic disruptions, especially in the vicinity of kilometer 228 on Ruta 9 which leads to central Buenos Aires. Additionally, protesters in Tucuman clashed with the police on Calle San Martin near Plaza Urquiza while attempting to march to Plaza de la Independecia; the incident took place hours before President Alberto Fernandez arrived in the city and further such confrontations are possible.

While most protests are likely to remain largely peaceful, clashes are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near all protest locations. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor any large demonstrations that may materialize over the course of the day.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow extra time for travel July 9.
