India: Goods transporters plan to join Feb. 26 nationwide strike called by the Confederation of All India Traders /update 1

Goods transporters to join nationwide strike planned by Confederation of All India Traders for Feb. 26. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA), a group representing the interests of truck drivers, plans to support a nationwide strike planned by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Feb. 26. Organizers have called the strike to condemn allegedly unfair tax policies of the central government. Hundreds of thousands of truck operators will probably take part in the work stoppage, prompting goods delivery delays. The strike is also highly likely to disrupt retail operations at small shops across the country, especially in traditional market areas. Alternative retailers, such as supermarkets, may experience increased demand.

Strike supporters will hold protests in cities and towns throughout India as part of the labor action. AITWA members plan to implement roadblocks at multiple locations during the strike. CAIT activists may also establish roadblocks or engage in mass marches during the action. CAIT members will most likely demonstrate in traditional market areas and at nearby public squares, while AITWA members may hold protests near goods transport hubs and toll road checkpoints. Participation in the various protests will vary considerably by location. Gatherings in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bengaluru could draw thousands of participants.

Officials will increase security near demonstrations. Authorities could impose barricades to prevent protesters from gathering near government buildings and other sensitive areas. Police could also cite ongoing COVID-19 gathering restrictions to prevent or break up demonstrations in some cities. While most of the protests will likely remain largely peaceful, localized clashes with police could occur, especially if law enforcement personnel try to disperse gatherings by force.

Advice

Confirm all deliveries and ground transport arrangements for Feb. 26. Consider alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive freights. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution due to the potential for security disturbances. Use caution near likely demonstration sites. Allow additional time for ground transportation near protests. Do not navigate any roadblocks as protesters may react violently. Heed all advice of security personnel.
