Hundreds protest against COVID-19 restrictions in Caranavi (La Paz department) on May 26; similar demonstrations possible in the near and medium term

Hundreds of protesters participated in a demonstration organized by the Provincial Agricultural Federation of Intercultural Communities of Caranavi union in Caranavi (La Paz department) on Tuesday, May 26, to protest against the current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) quarantine measures in place, amongst other things. The protesters reportedly marched through the streets of the municipality and gathered in the town square, despite the state of emergency and quarantine measures in place. In addition to demanding flexibility and lifting of the quarantine restrictions which are halting commercial activity, protesters also demanded the government provides fuel amid shortages, and that they set a date for the postponed general elections moved due to COVID-19 from Sunday, May 3.

There were no immediate reports of clashes or arrests, however, further rallies and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the near and medium term.
