French officials record over 1400 earthquakes between May 10 and June 15

According to the French government's Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM), over 1400 earthquakes have been recorded in Mayotte between May 10 and June 15. At least 20 earthquakes of magnitude higher than 5, and 14 quakes of a magnitude higher than 4, were recorded over this same period. Additional and potentially stronger earthquakes are possible in the coming hours and days.

Context

Five people have been injured since May 10 and around 60 buildings damaged.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, to be prepared for more earthquakes, and to heed any instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments. In the event of an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
