Warning

Event

Blockades recently erected by protesters in Sucre (Chuquisaca department) were lifted over the weekend of Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13. However, blockades may be reinstated in the coming days along several thoroughfares, including to Sucre Alcantarí International Airport (SRE).

Protests, as well as associated business and transportation disruptions, may continue in the coming days. Heightened security measures are likely in the vicinity of any gatherings.

Context

Multiple unions and civil society groups have organized protests and strike since April 29 in defense of the development of the Incahuasi gas field and to demand that royalties on gas revenue be paid to the Chuquisaca department.

Advice

Individuals present in Sucre and elsewhere in Chuquisaca department are advised to avoid all protests, never attempt to cross a roadblock without authorization due to the potential for violence, and allow for additional time to reach their destinations while strikes and demonstrations are ongoing. Potentially affected travelers are advised to contact their respective airlines for more information.
