Bolivia: Flood risk persists in four departments as of Jan. 16 /update 2

Event

As of January 16, Bolivian authorities are maintaining an orange alert for Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Beni, and La Paz departments due to persistent rains that have been ongoing since November. Low-lying areas and areas adjacent to rivers in these departments are particularly at risk of flooding. According to local officials, nearly 4000 families have been affected since the heavy rains began. As heavy rain is forecast to continue at least through February, the risk of flooding and associated hazards is expected to continue in affected areas in the coming weeks.

Flooding is common in Bolivia, particularly during the rainy season (October to April), and can result in significant transportation disruptions, structural damage, and loss of life.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
