France: National strike planned November 16

Main French unions call for strikes and protests on November 16; transportation disruptions possible

Warning

Event

Main French unions have announced a new national strike set to take place on Thursday, November 16, to denounce President Emmanuel Macron’s “liberal” policies. As a result, transportation disruptions on certain bus and rail services, as well as protests throughout the country’s main cities, are likely throughout the day.

Further details regarding the impact of the strikes are yet to be released.

Context

Related strikes and protests took place on September 12, September 21, and October 19, to denounce President Macron’s labor laws. Although this will mark the fourth day of industrial action against Macron’s social policies, a sharp decline in union members’ participation has become evident.

During the former strikes, at least 95 percent of trains continued to run, although intercity and commuter trains experienced considerable disruptions.

Advice

Travelers are advised to keep abreast of the situation and to confirm their travel itineraries.
