Parking facilities at metro stations in New Delhi not available from the morning of Tuesday, August 14, until 14:00 (local time) August 15; large crowds expected in city center

Warning

Event

For security reasons, parking facilities at metro stations in the capital New Delhi will be closed from the morning of Tuesday, August 14, until 14:00 (local time) on August 15, amid Independence Day celebrations. Metro stations will remain open. The New Delhi metro is a nearly 300 km (185 mi) network with over 200 stations, connecting the most remote parts of the city to central areas. It has an average daily ridership of 2.8 million passengers.

Context

Independence Day, one of the three national holidays, is observed in all Indian states. On August 15, the prime minister usually hoists the flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi and delivers a speech. To prevent terrorist attacks, security measures are strengthened in major cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai, as well as in restive states. In New Delhi, the airspace around the Red Fort will be declared a no-fly zone to prevent aerial attacks.

Advice

Individuals present August 14 in New Delhi should anticipate road restrictions, impacts on transportation, stricter than usual security protocols, and large celebratory crowds (tens of thousands of spectators). Adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
