The UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) updated its Iran travel advisory Jan. 4. The FCO now advises against all but essential travel to Iran. The FCO's existing advisories for British Iranian dual nationals and Iranian border areas remain unchanged. The updated advisory follows the death of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Shi'a militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Mohandis in a US-led airstrike in Baghdad, Iraq, Jan. 3. The advisory is also in response to the reaction in Iran. The FCO has noted that rallies and marches are scheduled nationwide in early January.
The US Department of State has not adjusted its advisory for Iran. It continues to advise citizens not to travel. The French government has warned travelers to avoid rallies following the killing of Soleimani. Other governments will likely issue similar advice and directives for nationals in the coming days.
Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Exercise caution and maintain a low public profile in Iran. Avoid all demonstrations. Monitor developments closely with trusted contacts.
