Since early October, violent protests and clashes throughout Iraq’s primarily Shi’a southern and central provinces have left at least 250 people dead and thousands more injured. The security situation in Iraq is a primary concern. The demonstrations were initially sparked by the government's decision to dismiss a popular military officer who was revered for his role in the fight against Islamic State, but have now morphed into demonstrations against the entire political elite, its system, and the sway of foreign influence.

The Iraq government is faced with a dilemma: it has offered concessions to meet protester demands, but protests have continued despite these offerings. New protester demands call for the entire overhaul of the current political system. Listen in as WorldAware experts Fahim Masoud and Adam Prusakowski discuss the current security situation in Iraq and what to expect looking ahead.
