The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched over a dozen ballistic missiles at Ayn al-Assad Air Base in Al Anbar Province and Harir Air Base in the Erbil Province of Iraq early Jan. 8. There have been no confirmed reports of casualties but the US Department of Defense has said that it is "working on initial battle damage assessments."

The ballistic missile strikes come a few days after the US conducted an airstrike Jan. 3 near Baghdad International Airport, killing Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and several prominent Iraqi Shi'a militia leaders. The US government has said that it took a defensive action, as Soleimani was planning an imminent attack, which would have endangered American lives in the Middle East. The US airstrike came following the storming of the US Embassy in Baghdad by Shi'a militias, Dec. 31. The US accused Iran for having orchestrated the attack against its embassy.

The following intelligence alerts provide insight into the situation as it evolves.
