The National Hurricane Center first monitored Hurricane Delta, then Invest 92L, on October 1 and was categorized as a Tropical Storm on October 5, becoming the earliest 25th named storm on record, surpassing TS Gamma of 2005. By Oct. 6, Delta rapidly intensified from a Category-2 hurricane to a Category-4 hurricane within 12 hours. Widespread tropical cyclone watches and warnings are issued throughout the Western Caribbean and the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo in Mexico. In a record-setting Atlantic hurricane season, Delta continues the trend as the 26th tropical cyclone and 25th named storm - breaking the record set by Gamma in 2005 by 44 days. Hurricane Delta is the 9th hurricane in the Atlantic basic and the 3rd major hurricane.
After making landfall over Louisiana early Oct. 10, Delta weakened to a tropical depression and has since transitioned to a post-tropical cyclone. The storm remnants will bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding across the southern and eastern US through at least Oct. 12. Activate contingency plans in areas where officials forecast tropical storm conditions. Heed all evacuation orders. Use extreme caution in low-lying coastal areas and near streams, creeks, and other waterways due to the high potential for severe flooding and storm surge.
