  • Location(s): Fanling, Hong Kong (map)
  • Date: Jan. 26
  • Impact: Increased security, business and transport disruptions; possible clashes

Summary
Demonstrators have reportedly blocked roads in the town of Fanling, Hong Kong, near the border with Shenzhen, southern Guangdong Province, as of the evening of Jan. 26. The protests were reportedly sparked by the government's decision to reserve a newly completed public housing estate as a quarantine camp in the town as part of its response to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak.

Riot police have been deployed to disperse the demonstrators. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if police use tear gas, water cannon, or other forms of force to clear the demonstrators. Some protesters have reportedly set fire to parts of the public housing estates. Additional violence and vandalism of property is possible.

Advice
Avoid all protests. Confirm the status of roads and allow additional travel time between Shenzhen and the affected part of northern Hong Kong though at least Jan. 27.
