  • Start Date: Early Oct. 28
  • Impact: Evacuations and ground transport disruptions; possible power outages

Summary

As of late Oct. 28, emergency crews continue to work to contain an active wildfire near Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles County, California. Sherman Oaks is located northwest of Los Angeles, California, and west of Burbank, California. The fire has grown to approximately 250 hectares (618 acres) and is 5-percent contained. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire; hot, dry, and windy conditions may hamper firefighting efforts over the coming days, and additional wildfire growth is likely.

Evacuations
Reports indicate there are currently mandatory evacuations from Mulholland Drive south to Sunset Boulevard and from Temescal Canyon Road east of the 405 Freeway. Evacuation warnings are in place for the Mountaingate Community, from Topanga Canyon Road east to Temescal Canyon Road, and from Mulholland Drive south to Sunset Boulevard. Emergency shelters for displaced residents are located at the Palisades Recreation Center, Westwood Recreation Center, Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Recreation Center, Stoner Recreation Center, and Cheviot Hills Recreation Center. Authorities could expand the mandatory evacuation orders and evacuation warnings, depending on evolving wildfire conditions.

Transport and Utilities
The wildfire is likely to continue to cause localized transport disruptions in areas surrounding the evacuated roads, including all off-ramps in both directions on 405 Freeway between 101 Freeway and Sunset Boulevard. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could continue to close routes within Sherman Oaks and surrounding communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. Traffic flows could also be disrupted during reentry periods after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region. Power outages are also possible.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged power outages.
