  • Incident: Wildfire
  • Location: Simi Valley, Ventura County, Calif.
  • Start Date: Early Oct. 30
  • Impact: Evacuations and ground transport disruptions; possible power outages

Summary

As of early Oct. 30, emergency crews are responding to an active and rapidly growing brush fire in Simi Valley, Ventura County, California. Simi Valley is located north of Thousand Oaks, and east of Ventura. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire; hot, dry, and very windy conditions may hamper firefighting efforts over the coming days, and additional wildfire growth is likely.

Evacuations
Reports indicate there are currently mandatory evacuations for Simi Valley, Unincorporated Simi Valley, and Moorpark. Mandatory evacuations are from Tierra Rejada south to Olsen/Madera Street and from Madera Street west to Highway 23. An emergency shelter for displaced residents is located at the Thousand Oaks Community Center in Thousand Oaks. Authorities could expand the mandatory evacuation orders, depending on evolving wildfire conditions.

Transport and Utilities
The wildfire is likely to continue to cause localized transport disruptions in areas surrounding the evacuated roads. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could continue to close routes within Simi Valley and surrounding communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. Traffic flows could also be disrupted during reentry periods after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region. Power outages are also possible.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged power outages.
