- Event: Rally
- Location: Beirut (map)
- Start Time/Date: 1430 Jan. 5
- Impact: Ground travel disruptions
Hizballah will hold a rally at the Sayyed al-Shuhada complex in southern Beirut from 1430 Jan. 5. The event is being held to mark the recent deaths of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Shi'a militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Mohandis. Soleimani and al-Mohandis were killed in a US-led airstrike in Baghdad, Iraq, Jan. 3. Hizballah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, will address the crowd.
The gathering is likely to be well supported and will almost certainly lead to ground travel disruptions near the complex Jan. 5 as attendees arrive and depart. Delays are possible on some routes leading from downtown Beirut to Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY). Security is likely to be maintained by Hizballah members. Marches in and around southern Beirut are also possible before or after the rally. Violence is unlikely; however, the event is likely to carry a strong anti-Israeli and anti-US sentiment.
Avoid the gathering as a general precaution. Monitor developments closely in Lebanon with a trusted contact. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Reconfirm the status of routes to and from BEY before departure Jan. 5.
