India: Heightened security likely for prime minister's visit Feb. 25 amid protests over fall of government

Prime Minister Modi to visit Puducherry Union Territory, India, Feb. 25 amid political protests. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely across Puducherry Union Territory during a scheduled visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Feb. 25 amid political protests. PM Modi will inaugurate various development projects and address a campaign rally for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the AFT ground at 1100, ahead of state polls scheduled to occur by May. The Indian National Congress (INC) - the party that lost power in the region after an unsuccessful trust vote Feb. 22 - and its alliance partners plan to hold protests Feb. 24. Organizers are blaming the BJP for allegedly orchestrating the defeat; protest details are unclear. Other parties have also vowed to demonstrate in the coming days, though they have yet to announce specific plans. Former Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and other political leaders will likely join the demonstrations; the largest protests will probably occur in Karaikal and central areas of Puducherry District. Gatherings may involve dozens of people.

Increased security is almost certain near event venues and potential protest sites, including government buildings such as the Raj Nivas, monuments, and political party offices. Skirmishes are possible, mainly if police try to disperse disruptive gatherings. Officials are likely to cordon off event venues and protest sites with large or high-profile attendance, causing localized transport disruptions. Authorities have announced traffic diversions and suspension at routes connecting Tamil Nadu State's Chennai and Puducherry, as well as the Gorimedu-Madagadipet section of the East Coast Road (ECR) Feb. 25.

Advice

Exercise caution near event venues and protest sites. Allow additional travel time; seek alternative routes to avoid demonstrations. Heed all security personnel instructions.
