Authorities have confirmed at least 10 fatalities and dozens of injuries in several areas of Maiduguri, Borno State, as of early Feb. 24 following an armed attack and attempted incursion by alleged Boko Haram militants the previous day. The official casualty toll could rise. Initial reports indicate explosions and heavy gunfire near Giwa military barracks at around 1745. Local sources also reported explosions near the University of Maiduguri and in Gwange due to alleged mortar shelling originating from the Kaleri area. Further details are unavailable.

Security operations remain ongoing. Heightened security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely through at least the morning of Feb. 24. Additional security incidents are possible.
