Mali: Anti-curfew protests likely to continue in Gao through late February

Protests condemning an existing curfew in Gao could continue in the northern Malian city through late February. The curfew, which is in force nightly between the hours of 2100-0500, was imposed on Feb. 15 for a period of 15 days in response to escalating insecurity in the area. Protests over the measure that first broke out in Gao on Feb. 21 continued into Feb. 23, with demonstrators blocking roads and setting tires on fire; youth activists assert that the curfew is being applied unfairly against certain segments of society.

Heightened security and localized transportation disruptions are likely if additional protests break out. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
