Pakistan: Unionized workers to strike, protest in Islamabad from Jan. 12

Unionized employees to indefinitely strike, protest in Islamabad, Pakistan, from Jan. 12. Increased security likely; disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers, including government employees, plan to hold an indefinite strike and associated protests in Islamabad from Jan. 12. Participants are denouncing the Finance Ministry’s refusal to increase government worker salaries and benefits. Dozens of worker bodies have announced support for the strike and protests, including clerks, as well as medical, airline, and oil and gas workers. Limited service disruptions are possible due to the strike. However, organizers may call off the action at short notice if an agreement with the government is reached.

Media sources report that protesters will gather at the Red Zone Jan. 12, which is where many government buildings, such as the National Assembly of Pakistan and the Ministry of Finance, are located. However, gatherings are also possible at public squares and monuments. Participation in protests is unclear; however, previous related protests have attracted dozens to a few hundred people. Attendance at gatherings will likely be affected by ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions.

Security personnel will almost certainly monitor larger protests and may enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse protesters. Demonstrators may block or march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Confirm all business appointments ahead of time.
