India: BJP likely to continue protests in Andhra Pradesh through mid-January

Bharitiya Janata Party protests likely in Andhra Pradesh, India, through mid January. Increased security likely; disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will likely continue to hold protests in Andhra Pradesh through mid-January. The BJP has held multiple protests in recent days denouncing idol desecration at multiple Hindu temples and has demanded that the state government take action to stop the vandalism. The BJP previously organized a protest Jan. 5 in Ramatheertham, Vizianagaram District, which is the location of one of the vandalized temples. Organizers also held a statewide protest Jan. 6 at district collectorates. Further protests are especially likely in Ramatheertham as well as in Prakasam district. BJP supporters may also hold protests denouncing the recent arrests of multiple party leaders; the leaders were arrested as they were attending the rally in Ramatheertham. Gatherings will likely involve dozens to a couple of hundred people.

Security forces will likely monitor protests and may enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions at larger rallies. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if security personnel forcibly try to disperse protesters. Ruling party supporters may also hold counter-rallies. Demonstrators may block or march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Confirm road status and allow additional travel time near protests.
