Algeria: Lawyers to demonstrate in Algiers September 27

Lawyers to demonstrate in Algiers on September 27; avoid any protest as a precaution

Warning

Event

Lawyers are planning to demonstrate in the capital Algiers on Sunday, September 27. Participants will reportedly gather in front of the Court of Algiers from 09:30 (local time). The event has been organised by the Bar Association of Algiers following a verbal altercation between their president, Abdelmadjid Sellini, and a magistrate during a court case. The bar association also vowed to strike from Sunday through October 4 as part of their protest, and boycott judicial activity at the Court of Algiers and in all the courts affiliated with it.

Although the demonstration is expected to remain peaceful, a heightened security presence is likely and localized disruptions are possible within the vicinity of the march. Further demonstrations relating to the incident are to be anticipated during the strike period.

Advice

Those in Algiers are advised to monitor developments, avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
