Libya: Multiple casualties in clashes between LNA and gunmen in Sabha September 14

Casualties on both sides as LNA forces clash with gunmen in Sabha on September 14; further clashes possible over the near term

Warning

Event

Troops affiliated with the Libyan National Army (LNA) clashed with gunmen in a residential area of Sabha on Monday, September 14, resulting in casualties on both sides. Reports indicate the clashes took place in the Abdul Kafi neighborhood during a raid by security forces and lasted around six hours. At least three gunmen and three members of the LNA forces are reported to have died in the clashes. Foreign nationals were reported to be among the dead gunmen. LNA sources claim that their adversaries were members of Islamic State (IS); however, other local sources report that the gunmen were involved in drug dealing and people trafficking.

Further clashes are possible in the area over the near term and a heightened security presence should be expected.

Advice

Those in Sabha are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
