UK: Protests planned nationwide on June 20-21 /update 8
Black Lives Matter and other associated demonstrations planned across the UK on June 20-21; remain vigilant due to the chance of counter-demonstrations and a heightened security presence
Event
According to police sources, over 60 demonstrations are planned in towns and cities across the UK on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, in support of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. In London, Saturday's main protest sites are expected to be Central Park in East Ham, Hyde Park, and Parliament Square. Counter-demonstrations are possible in the vicinity of some protests.
A heightened security presence is expected around protests sites and clashes with or between rival demonstrators and law enforcement are possible.
Context
George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired and detained, and one has since been charged with murder. BLM supporters gathered in Minneapolis on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US and internationally.
Demonstrations have occurred on the previous two weekends in the UK and on June 13 more than 100 people were arrested following clashes between far-right counter-protesters and the police.
