Explosion at a religious school in Ishkamish district (Takhar province) kills at least seven students on June 18; further incidents possible over the near term

An explosion killed at least seven students at a religious school in Ishkamish district (Takhar province) on Thursday morning, June 18. At least seven others were also injured in the explosion. The nature of the explosion is not clear at this time, although sources have suggested that it was the result of a mortar head. 

On Thursday, clerics from across Afghanistan reportedly gathered in Kabul to denounce recent attacks on religious scholars and students. Two prior incidents on June 2 and June 12 targeted mosques in Kabul, killing at least six people. The clerics have called for greater protection and action from the government with regards to the security of religious scholars, and other religious figures.

Further incidents involving mosques and other religious sites are possible across Afghanistan over the near term.
