Suspected narcotic traffickers clashed with Azerbaijani security forces after attempting to enter the country from Iran in the Jalilabad region on Wednesday evening, June 17. The incident occurred at the country's Goytepe border detachment outpost near Kurunj village of Jalilabad region. Upon being discovered by border guards, one of the assailants was shot as they attempted to flee, and was later found dead. The other two assailants were later tracked down and arrested. Azerbaijani officials claim that one of the assailants was carrying a large bag of narcotics.

A heightened security presence at the Iran-Azerbaijan border in the Jalilabad region is to be anticipated in the near term.
