Tornado injures three people in Sancti Spiritus province May 25, rain and thunderstorms forecast on May 26-27; associated disruptions expected

Heavy rains and a tornado were reported on Monday, May 25, across Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos provinces. According to reports, three people were injured and at least 90 houses were damaged in Sancti Spiritus after a tornado hit the area. Flooding and thunderstorms impacted several areas of Cienfuegos, and Villa Clara provinces, causing damage to homes and infrastructure. Heavy rain and thunderstorms were forecast over large parts of Cuba on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27. As a result, there is the potential for associated transport and business continuity disruptions on Thursday, May 28. 

Associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, are likely in affected areas. Power outages are also possible. 

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and prepare for transportation disruptions (including road closures). Furthermore, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
