Slovenia: Anti-government protest planned in multiple cities nationwide May 15

Anti-government protests planned in Ljubljana and other cities on May 15; further protests possible in the near term

Warning

Event

According to local media sources on Friday, May 15, anti-government protests against the third term of Prime Minister Janez Jansa are planned to be held throughout the day in Ljubljana and other cities in Slovenia. The protests are to go ahead despite Jansa previously stating that large public events are only permissible once a vaccination for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been discovered and widely distributed. The protesters claim that Jansa is abusing government authority amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of people are expected to gather for the protests at government buildings across the country.

Further protests are expected in Ljubljana and other cities nationwide in the near term. A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected near all protest sites.

Advice

Individuals in Slovenia are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized business and transportation disruptions around protest sites.
