Uganda: Thousands displaced due to floods in Western Region May 10 /update 1

As of Sunday, May 10, heavy rains and associated floods that have been affecting the Western Region since Tuesday, May 5, have displaced around 100,000 people. According to local authorities, numerous rivers in the Kasese and Bundibugyo districts overflowed, causing widespread flooding in the region. Significant infrastructural damage was also reported to roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals, as well as power outages. At least one person died in the region according to the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS).

The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) forecast torrential rains through May in various parts of the country. Further flooding and associated transportation and power disruptions are to be anticipated.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
