Weather officials issue red weather warnings for floods in the Gironde and Landes departments May 11-12; associated disruptions possible

Warning

Event

The French meteorological agency issued red weather warnings (highest on a four-tier scale) due to forecast heavy rains and associated floods in the Gironde and Landes departments on Monday, May 11. Orange warnings (second highest) were also issued for southwestern and central departments including the Île-de-France region. The warnings will potentially remain in effect until at least 06:00 (local time) on Tuesday, May 12.

In Gironde, emergency services were deployed after flash floods that have affected the department since Saturday, May 9, resulted in minor infrastructure damage to houses and roads.

Related transportation disruptions, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are to be anticipated over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in France, notably in the Gironde or Landes departments, are advised to monitor local weather reports, prepare for transportation disruptions (including road closures) and power outages, confirm travel itineraries, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
