Laos: Heavy rainfall and flash floods forecast nationwide through June

Meteorological forecasters predict heavy rainfall and resultant flash flooding across Laos throughout June; associated disruptions possible

Informational

Event

On Monday, May 4, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) announced that it was forecasting heavy rainfall throughout June across Laos. Dr Lam Hung Son of the MRC stated that powerful downpours could cause flash floods at any time through the month, which may possibly result in damage to properties, crops, and even cause fatalities. Earlier on Friday, April 24, seven people died after flash floods hit Kiawtaloun village (Luang Prabang province).

Associated transportation disruption is expected in areas affected by floods.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
