Malaysia: Heavy rainfall causes severe flooding in Betong district (Sarawak state) May 9

Heavy rains which have been continuing since Friday, May 8, caused severe flooding in Betong district (Sarawak state) on Saturday, May 9. Six villages and at least 650 families are affected by the floods. The Sarawak Disaster Relief Management Committee stated that evacuation plans are being considered despite the ongoing movement control order (MCO). Floodwaters are reported to have reached as high as 1.5 m (4.9 ft) after rivers overflowed. Water levels are still rising as of Saturday and roads leading to the areas are flooded by about 0.75 m (2.5 ft) of water. Floods also hit Baram district (Sarawak state) earlier on Sunday, May 3.

The weather in Sarawak has been unpredictable in the past week. Further rainfall is possible over the coming days and may cause consequent flooding along with associated disruptions to transportation and businesses. 

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
