Unidentified attackers killed a senior police officer in Port Moresby on Saturday, May 9, with reports indicating that off-duty Defence Force personnel may have been responsible. The officer was beaten and later died in hospital. The attack occurred at the ATS Settlement adjoining the Police Air Transport Services Unit base. Some police officers were seen driving in a convoy around parts of Moresby on Saturday following the attack, along with reports of some officers firing gunshots into the air and a confrontation between a small group of police officers and some Defence Force personnel. A police spokesperson stated that as of Sunday, May 10, the situation was calm and one suspect has been identified.

A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the incident and unrest cannot be ruled out in the near term.
