Libya: Shelling targets Mitiga International Airport (MJI) May 9

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transportation, fuel tanks and passenger planes at Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) were damaged by artillery fire on Saturday, May 9. The Transport Ministry blamed forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) for the shelling, though the LNA has yet to comment on the incident. Emergency personnel have been deployed to the airport to combat a blaze that erupted in the wake of the attack.

Flight delays and cancelations are to be expected at MJI over the coming hours. Similar attacks are possible over the near term.

Context

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
