Floods following heavy rains cause at least eight casualties nationwide as of May 6; further adverse weather expected

Warning

Event

Flooding and landslides following heavy rain have killed at least eight individuals nationwide between Friday, May 1, and Wednesday, May 6. The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MINEMA) stated that as of May 6, the most affected areas are the Northern and Western provinces where hundreds of homes, as well as crops and livestock were lost to the floods.

Further heavy rain is forecast in Kigali and in the Northern Province, as well as in the districts of Rubavu, Nyabihu, Rutsiro, Ngororero, Muhanga, and Ruhango, until Tuesday, May 12.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
