Algeria: Student protests reported in Algiers, other cities May 28 /update 7

Thousands of Algerian students are demonstrating across the country on Tuesday, May 28, to demand fundamental changes in political leadership following former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's resignation from office and the postponement of the planned July 4 elections. Large demonstrations have been reported in central Algiers and in other major cities, including Constantine, Oran, and Tizi Ouzou. 

A heightened security presence and associated disruptions (e.g. transportation, commercial, internet service) are likely during protests. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Further political rallies and protests are likely across Algeria in the coming days and weeks amid the ongoing political uncertainty.

Context

Related student protests have been held nationwide on Thursdays. On May 23, police forces used tear gas and batons to disperse students gathered in Algiers to demand the cancelation of the presidential elections set to take place on July 4, as well as the implementation of transitional bodies and the departure of government officials associated with the administration of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Bouteflika resigned as president on April 2 following weeks of protests sparked by his intention to run for a fifth term. A caretaker government was approved on March 31, though protesters have vowed to continue to hold demonstrations until the elections.
