Egypt: Clashes reported during protest in Luxor May 28

Violent protest erupts in Nag Abou Asaba (Luxor) May 28; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions reported

According to local sources, security forces used tear gas and live ammunitions to disperse protesters gathered in the Nag Abou Asaba district of Luxor in the morning (local time) of Monday, May 28. Protesters were reportedly denouncing the removal of settlements due to a governmental road construction project. Unconfirmed reports claim security forces were forcing residents to leave their homes.

A heightened security presence has been reported in the area and further clashes between security forces and the residents cannot be ruled out. Further such protests are possible in the coming days.
