Chad: Intercommunal violence breaks out in Ouaddaï and Sila regions May 16-20
Clashes between communities in Marfa (Ouaddaï region) May 16-17 leaves at least nine people dead; fighting spreads to Sila region May 19-20

Fighting broke out between members of rival communities in the Marfa area of Ouaddaï region on Thursday, May 16, and Friday, May 17. At least nine people were killed and several others wounded in the clashes between farmers. Soldiers were deployed from Abéché to stop the fighting, arresting around 30 people suspected of instigating the incident.
Additional clashes broke out on Sunday, May 19, and Monday, May 20, in Sila region. Between 19 and 21 people were killed in the villages of Amchaloka and Amsabarna. Dozens of people were also reportedly wounded. Further intercommunal violence is possible in the area in the near term.
Context
Deadly intercommunal clashes occur on a regular basis in the Ouaddaï region. The cause of the most recent violence is still being determined.
