Argentina: Anti-corruption rally planned in Buenos Aires May 21

Civil society groups plan anti-corruption rally in Buenos Aires on May 21 to coincide with the trial of Cristina Kirchner; heightened security measures and traffic disruptions expected

Warning

Event

An anti-corruption demonstration is expected to be held in the capital Buenos Aires on Tuesday, May 21, to coincide with the trial of former President Cristina Kirchner. Supporters are being asked to gather outside of the Patrocinio Juridico building from 18:00 to 21:00 (local time). The group organizing the rally is also calling for similar demonstrations to be held at the same time across the country. While the protest is expected to remain peaceful, a heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected in the area.

Context

Similar demonstrations were held throughout Buenos Aires on Wednesday, May 15, after there were rumors that the trial may be delayed or dropped. Kirchner is being accused of favoritism by awarding public works contracts worth 1.2 billion USD to certain businesses during her presidency from 2007-20015.

Advice

Individuals in Buenos Aires, and Argentina more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
