Venezuela: University professors and students to strike May 21-23 /update 1

The Federation of Associations of University Professors of Venezuela (FAPUV) is organizing a nationwide 72-hour strike starting on Tuesday, May 21. University professors and students across the country are expected to participate in the strike. FAPUV leaders also announced that associated demonstrations will be held through Thursday, May 23. A heightened security presence is expected throughout the country, particularly in Caracas. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are also possible.

Context

The FAPUV held a 24-hour and a 48-hour strike earlier in May to demand democratic institutions and better working conditions for teachers. Venezuela is experiencing an ongoing crisis spurred by President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration to a second term as president on January 10, following last year's contested election, prompting the National Assembly to declare a national emergency. At least 50 foreign governments, including the US, Canada, and Brazil, among others, have since recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the interim head of state.
