Papua New Guinea: 7.2-earthquake hits Bulolo (Morobe province) May 7

Event

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit 33 km (20 mi) northwest of Bulolo (Morobe province) on Tuesday morning (local time), May 7. Early reviews of the earthquake indicate there is no threat of a tsunami, according to a US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) notice.  

Initial damage reports were not available as of 07:30; however power, telecommunication, and transportation disruptions are possible. Further aftershocks and associated damages are possible in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in Morobe province are advised to be prepared for aftershocks, anticipate transportation, telecommunication, and power disruptions, and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. road closures, evacuation notices). In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
