Ukraine: Authorities investigate bomb threats in Lviv and Kharkiv May 6

Event

Police conducted searches for potential explosive devices across 15 hotels in Lviv (Lviv oblast) and Kharkiv (Kharkiv oblast) on Monday, May 6, following a series of anonymous bomb threats. At least eight hotels in Lviv and an additional seven in Kharkiv were evacuated and searched by police. 

A heightened security presence and lingering transportation disruptions are possible in the abovementioned cities over the coming hours. 

Context

Bomb threats are becoming increasingly common throughout Ukraine. In late April, a string of bomb threats forced evacuations at common gathering points (schools, shopping centers, and tourist attractions) across the country. Similar incidents have also targeted airports nationwide in previous weeks. 

In the vast majority of cases, security forces determine there to be no explosive device planted in the location threatened.

Individuals in Lviv and Kharkiv advised to avoid the affected areas, monitor developments to the situation, and report any suspicious behavior or activity to the authorities.
