Zimbabwe: Inflation-related protests possible in near term

Protests possible in coming days and weeks as consumer prices, including bread, dramatically increase since April 15; monitor the situation

Warning

Event

Consumer prices have risen sharply across Zimbabwe since Monday, April 15, and may drive protests and unrest in the near term. According to local reports, the price of bread increased from 1.80 RTGS, the new Zimbabwean currency, on Monday to 3.50 RTGS on Tuesday, April 16. Other consumer goods and basic staples have also reportedly increased dramatically. Associated public demonstrations and protests are possible in the coming days and weeks if the economic situation does not improve.

Context

A fuel price increase in January 2019 led to strikes and violent protests. The military responded with a crackdown on the unrest and at least eight people died in the violence.

Advice

Individuals in Zimbabwe are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any public demonstrations or protests as a precaution, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, and anticipate possible shortages of foodstuffs and supplies.
