VBIED explosion kills at least four people in Mogadishu on April 17; second explosion reported on Maka Al Mukarama Avenue within several hours of first explosion

Warning

Event

A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) reportedly killed at least four people and wounded five others near the Dabka Junction on Maka Al Mukarama Avenue in Mogadishu on Wednesday, April 17. The explosion, which occurred at approximately 15:20 (local time), reportedly targeted senior officials gathering near the Waberi police station.

Earlier on Wednesday, an under-vehicle improvised explosive device (UVIED) targeted a senior intelligence official outside the Mubarak Hotel on Maka Al Mukarama Avenue at approximately 10:00.  Al-Shabaab reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks. Similar attacks are possible in Mogadishu over the near term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Advice

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the affected area, monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
